With the passage of HB 5395, all Washington schools must adopt a curriculum that aligns with new state sexual health guidelines. Implementation of this curriculum is required for the 2021-22 school year with elementary SEL components in place by 2022-23.
At its second community information on March 24 Colleen Anders, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, outlined the HSD's curriculum adoption process relating to the state's new requirements for Comprehensive Sexual Health Education. Questions and answers from the first community engagement night (Feb. 16, 2021) and community input from the second night will be posted on the CSHE Curriculum Selection web page under "About HSD."
The district has convened a curriculum adoption committee to review and identify potential learning materials that comply with CSHE standards. This committee will present the recommended curriculum to the Instructional Materials Committee which will evaluate the curriculum using the state selection rubric. The IMC will then make its recommendation to the Hockinson School District Board of Directors who will discuss and have the option to approve the recommended curriculum.
HSD families will have the ability to review and opt out of whatever CSHE curriculum is adopted.
Prior to adoption, community members will have the opportunity to express their opinions on the curriculum at general school board meetings during public comment.
