HSD to Remain in Remote Learning through 1st Semester

COVID Meter

Dear HSD Families:

For the past several months, our reopening decisions have followed the Decision Tree created by Washington’s Department of Health and guidance from the Clark County Public Health Department. Currently, COVID infections are increasing rapidly in our county and the Clark County Public Health Department does not forecast a significant decline in infections by the end of the calendar year. These conditions prevent us from safely moving toward a hybrid learning format (in which half of our students attend in-person twice per week). Instead:

- The HSD will remain in Remote Learning through the remainder of 1st Semester, January 28, 2021.

- All current in-person services for Kindergarteners, students with special learning needs, and those needing additional support services will continue.

We planned to transition Grades 1 and 2 to a hybrid format on Monday, Nov. 30. However, we now anticipate that these two grade levels would be the first to phase in at the semester transition (February 1). In the meantime, we will implement interventions for Grades 1 and 2 students who need individualized academic support. This support could take many different forms and our HHES administrators are working with teacher teams to determine next steps.

All three HSD schools have launched interventions to support our students academically and emotionally.

This announcement will surely disappoint many students, staff, and families. We are trying to balance the educational needs of our students while at the same time protecting their health and that of your families, our staff, and the Hockinson community.  Making this announcement now enables us to focus our resources on improving remote instruction and supporting students rather than operate in uncertainty. We also hope it gives our families the ability to plan their schedules accordingly. We will continue to monitor updates on infections and treatments and be in close contact with our health department with the goal of bringing students back on campus as soon as we can ensure everyone's safety.

Sincerely,

Steve Marshall

Superintendent

Hockinson School District
